Bamboo forests are among the fastest-growing and most management-responsive forest types in Taiwan, covering approximately 180,000 hectares, or about one-tenth of the country‵s forest area. Due to their rapid biomass accumulation, bamboo can play a valuable role in natural carbon sink strategies if managed sustainably. Previously, limitations in data integration and policy alignment have constrained their full potential. This project aims to systematically assess the role of bamboo in climate adaptation and sustainable governance through cross-scale observations, modeling, and stakeholder engagement.
Building on the prior phase’s development of a cross-scale aboveground biomass estimation framework, this study will deepen long-term monitoring of managed plots, enhance the precision and spatial resolution of remote sensing and AI models, and simulate carbon storage potential under diverse climate and land-use scenarios. These efforts will be integrated with ecosystem service assessments and community collaboration to develop governance tools that support policy application.
Over the next three years, the project aims to deliver carbon sink estimates that reflect real-world management contexts and social acceptability, while providing decision-support tools for the Taiwan Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency (TFNCA). Assuming no expansion of current bamboo forest area, we estimate the project would scientifically verify approximately 7 to 12 million tons of forest carbon sequestration, equivalent to 2–4% of Taiwan’s total emissions in 2021, advancing sustainable forest governance.
