To facilitate and achieve Taiwan's 2050 net-zero emission target, Academia Sinica published the Policy Recommendations on Taiwan's Net-Zero Technology Research and Development in November 2022. In 2023, Academia Sinica officially launched the Academia Sinica Net-Zero Technology Research and Development Program, proactively planning and investing in the R&D and practical testing of key net-zero technologies.
To accelerate the progress of net-zero technology R&D, Academia Sinica has set clear research topics and project objectives, driving the program through a "mission-oriented" and "project management" approach. Furthermore, the Net-Zero Technology Office was established in 2023 to assist in the promotion, administrative operations, and research advisory tasks of the program.
For the year 2025, Academia Sinica has approved a total of 12 net-zero technology R&D projects. The key themes include:
Decarbonized hydrogen (methane pyrolysis)
Geothermal energy
Ocean energy environmental surveys
Development of Kuroshio current turbine generators
High-efficiency solar photovoltaics (including perovskite solar cell modules)
Biomass carbon sinks
Social dimensions of advanced net-zero technologies
Marine blue carbon
AI energy conservation
Fuel cells
Biomass pyrolysis
Biomethane
