Strengthening Local and Global Research Networks in Sustainability Science

Future Earth Assembly & Sustainability Research & Innovation Congress

To support the development of Future Earth's Global Research Network and its core operational strategies, the Global Secretariat Hub (GSH) Taipei organized a two-day Annual Assembly Meeting in Panama City in June 2023.

In June 2024, the GSH Taipei team also participated in the Future Earth Annual Assembly Meeting held in Helsinki and contributed to onsite operations together with the GSH Sweden and Japan. The meeting brought together around one hundred members from the Future Earth Global Research Network and its communities to discuss research priorities and network expansion strategies for advancing global sustainability research and advocacy.

In addition, in June 2025, the GSH Taipei team participated in the Sustainability Research and Innovation Congress held in Chicago as well as American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting in New Orleans, United States, with the aim of strengthening the global linkages of Taiwan's transdisciplinary research network.

Future Earth Global Research Network Liaison

The GSH Taipei serves as the liaison for Future Earth's Global Research Networks (GRNs), including the Integrated Land Ecosystem–Atmosphere Processes Study (iLEAPS), the Urban Knowledge-Action Network (KAN), and the Risk Knowledge-Action Network (KAN). Its main responsibilities include supporting the operation and strategic development of these GRNs, facilitating global and regional collaborations, and promoting their research and engagement activities.

Partnership with Ocean KAN (Knowledge Action Networks)

In March 2023, the GSH Taipei co-hosted an event with the Ocean KAN, welcoming 12 international participants from 11 countries to exchange experiences on advancing ocean sustainability. The event marked Ocean KAN's first in-person Inner Circle Meeting. Inner Circle members—including scholars and NGO representatives from Taiwan—participated in workshops aimed at strengthening their capacity for co-designing transdisciplinary research and discussed strategies for expanding the Ocean KAN community.

In April 2024, the Ocean KAN Global Coordinator, together with ocean scholars from Palau, the Cook Islands, and Tahiti, visited Dulan, Taiwan, to engage with the local Amis community on issues of ocean resilience and marine conservation. In collaboration with the GSH Taipei and the local Amis community, Ocean KAN organized a workshop that focused on marine conservation and facilitated exchanges between Austronesian traditional ecological knowledge and marine science. Discussions explored ways to connect Austronesian ecological knowledge across Pacific Island nations and integrate it with marine science to advance ocean sustainability. The outcomes "A Front Lines Look at Peer-to-Peer Sharing of Indigenous Knowledge and Academic Science" .
