Activities at IRDR ICoE - Taipei
Overview
At IRDR ICoE - Taipei, we are dedicated to advancing disaster risk reduction through various initiatives. Our mission is to support participants from low- and middle-income countries by providing essential resources for training, research, and travel. We believe that with the right support, we can drive meaningful changes in the international landscape of disaster risk reduction.
Advanced Institutes
Our advanced institutes are immersive workshops designed for around 20 participants from low- and middle-income countries. We cover travel expenses and offer training led by leading experts in the field. Participants benefit from insightful lectures, engaging discussions, and field trips that provide practical experience. Each institute also includes a seed grant program, enabling selected attendees to pursue innovative research initiatives. Here are some recent highlights:
● 2024 Advanced Institute on Health Investigation and Air Sensing for Asian Pollution
Held in Malaysia, this institute brought together 27 participants and 4 expert lecturers for three days of intensive learning focused on health risks related to air pollution.
● 2024 Advanced Institute on Natural Hazard of Himalaya - Landslide and Fault Activity
Conducted in Kathmandu, this event welcomed 19 attendees and six lecturers, exploring the complexities of landslides and fault activity in the Himalayas while discussing risk mitigation strategies.
● 2024 Advanced Institute on Environmental Exposure and Health Impacts in South-East Asia
Hosted at Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry in Vietnam, this institute gathered 19 early to mid-career researchers and practitioners. Participants engaged with six expert lecturers to examine the impacts of environmental exposure on public health.
● 2023 Advanced Institute on Health Investigation and Air Sensing for Asian Pollution
Held at Academia Sinica in Taipei, this gathering included 18 participants from 8 countries exploring the links between air pollution, climate change, and health.
● 2023 Advanced Institute on Air Pollution and Health Impacts in South-East Asia
This institute focused on environmental exposure and health, bringing together 19 attendees at Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry in Vietnam.
We encourage all attendees to propose research initiatives that address pressing global challenges.
Seed Grants
Every year, we award seed grants of $15,000 USD to 2-3 nominated participants from eachr advanced institute. These grants support innovative research projects that contribute to disaster risk reduction.
Conference Sessions
Our active participation in major international conferences allows us to share knowledge and foster collaboration. Recent highlights include:
● 2024 Sustainability Research and Innovation Congress (SRI) Finland
We organized a session in Finland featuring multiple speakers discussing innovative sustainability strategies.
● 2024 Asia Oceania Geosciences Society (AOGS) South Korea
Held in South Korea, we hosted two sessions and an exhibitor booth, sponsoring flights and allowances for speakers from low- and middle-income countries.
● 2023 Sustainability Research and Innovation Congress (SRI) Panama
We organized a session featuring six speakers focused on sustainability innovations.
● 2023 Asia Oceania Geosciences Society (AOGS) Singapore
We maintained an exhibitor booth and hosted two sessions , engaging with attendees on crucial geoscience topics.
