Global Participation and Linkages in Sustainability Science
In 2024-2025, Future Earth Taipei focused on increasing the visibility of Taiwan’s scientific community within global networks. Future Earth Taipei participated in the Future Earth Assembly 2024 & 2025, and the Sustainability Research and Innovation Congress (SRI) 2024 & 2025. As a National Committee, Future Earth Taipei not only contributed valuable perspectives and relayed international insights, but also facilitated knowledge exchange by coordinating sessions covering just energy transition, resilience and capacity building, climate data and policy, green healthcare, digital food solutions, and water-energy-food nexus. To further connect domestic research with global platforms, representatives from Future Earth Taipei attended the Asia Oceania Geosciences Society (AOGS) and American Geophysical Union (AGU) Annual Meetings, showcasing Taiwan’s sustainability research.
Strengthening Domestic Communities and International Collaboration
Future Earth Taipei serves as a key interface for bridging domestic efforts with global frameworks. Highlights from 2024 to 2025 include:
- Future Earth Community Collaboration: Future Earth Taipei facilitated thematic dialogues through co-branded events, such as the 2024 Ocean Action Symposium (with Ocean KAN), the 2025 Sustainable Finance Webinars (with Finance and Economics KAN and Future Earth Japan Hub), the 2025 International Conference on AI for a Sustainable Society (with SDA and Future Earth Canada Hub), and the 2025 Urban KAN Webinar: Insights from the IPCC Cities Report - Cities & Low Carbon Transition (with Urban KAN).
- International Scientific Exchange: Future Earth Taipei invited international experts, including Nobel laureates, National Academicians, the Director of the Ocean KAN, and delegates from the Global Research Networks (GRNs) and the Future Earth Canada Hub, to share insights on net-zero greenhouse emissions, AI sustainability, marine governance, etc. These interactions alongside cross-disciplinary networking events reinforced the role of Future Earth Taipei as a collaborative platform.
Serving as a Communication and Engagement Platform
Acting as a bridge for information, Future Earth Taipei provides global sustainability insights to local scholars and stakeholders. The Future Earth Taipei Secretariat selects and shares compelling research from Anthropocene magazine - a Future Earth publication exploring human impact on the planet - and distributes the Future Earth monthly newsletter featuring the latest news from GRNs. By utilizing social media platforms and digital bulletins, Future Earth Taipei ensures that opportunities for collaboration, calls for papers, and international employment news are accessible to the domestic academic community.
Empowering Early Career Researchers (ECRs)
In line with the spirit of Future Earth, a core mission of Future Earth Taipei is to cultivate the next generation of sustainability professionals. The ECR WG has established a local network that currently includes approximately 39 members. In 2024-2025, the WG organized a virtual talk series featuring 20 sessions, where ECRs from various disciplines shared their findings. These webinars provided a platform for young scholars to engage with senior researchers and practitioners across academia, government, and industry. Through these capacity-building activities, the ECR WG strives to equip the next generation with the transdisciplinary skills necessary to address complex sustainability challenges.
